A degree of presence and careful attention to detail”.

The £16m Marjorie & Arnold Ziff Building, University of Leeds, designed by Farrell & Clark has been presented with an ‘Award for New Building’ in The Leeds Architecture Awards 2008.

With it’s curving walls and six storey glass atrium, the Marjorie & Arnold Ziff Building provides a clear point of arrival for students and visitors.  The iconic building features low-energy temperature controls, natural ventilation and solar shading.

All of the short listed entries in the Leeds Awards for Architecture were visited by a panel of 11 experts, led by Keith Bradley, winner of last year’s Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Stirling Prize.

He said the Ziff building had achieved “a degree of presence” despite occupying an awkward narrow site beside the powerful Parkinson Building.  “Complex building forms such as this need careful attention to detail, which this has evidently had”, he added.
