National Science Learning Centre for the University of York

The Centre provides  innovative experimental continuing development courses for science teachers and technicians and is the hub of a new national network of Science Learning Centres.
The building comprises 2 main elements: a 3 storey teaching block and a 2 storey quadrant block which contains the Centres major functions.  These comprise multi science teaching laboratories, twin 300 seat lecture theatres, resource centre, teaching and seminar facilities and a restaurant with bar.  The entrance hall provides exhibition space.  All spaces have been designed for maximum flexibility and multi functional use.
The building itself has been designed as a ‘learning tool’, incorporating many energy saving and sustainable features including geothermal heating and cooling, a green roof and highly flexible and efficient mechanical and electrical systems.  Winner of the 2006 ‘Green Gown Award’ for Sustainable Construction.
